this booklet combines the publication by david smith’s daughter, candida n smith, with his impressive works of metal and paint. during his lifetime, smith has worked in a variety of mediums and distinct styles. the design challenge of this book was to showcase the wide range of work in his portfolio in a visually exciting way while staying coherent.

the graphical elements used throughout the book were taken from david smith’s sculptures
the book cover design as well as the majority of the pages utilizes the shapes outlined below. these were traced from the metal sculptural works of david smith and used to simulate typography. each individual chapter cover was inspired by smith’s painting and stencil works.
